Kids warm up city streets 'muralizing' Sun boxes
Two years ago, Gloria Cardwell-Hoeppner saw something that caught her eye. The executive director of the West End Biz attended a city-building conference and stumbled into a neighbourhood beautification session called "News boxes need not be noxious" -- a seminar on exploring different ways to warm up streets in downtown communities.
Siloam Mission Story: Why Don't They Just Get a Job?
The problems faced by homeless people are complex. Solutions start with compassion. Just get a job! Perhaps you've never said that out loud, but you may have thought it. Why are people living on the streets? Why do they need shelters? It isn't hard to get a job.
Success with your support: ICYA's 3rd Annual Calling to Connect Banquet, "Never Alone" raised over $121,000!
This year's event was held on October 2, 2009, and what a fabulous evening it turned out to be! We were honored to present volunteer achievement awards to 3 very special people who have gone beyond expectation. We are thankful for Darian Soldat, Derek Richard and Rosaline Rempel.
A
big helping of powerlessness (story from The Messenger)
I was powerless. It was a real inversion as well. I was used to
being the resource guy, messiahtype, to people in our community;
and, suddenly, everything shifted and I needed a saviour.
A
quiet girl with a strong voice (story from The Messenger)
The Christian Church has done so much for victim advocacy over
the years, as it should. It feels like we need to be talking about
how we relate to offenders as well though.
Localized
fire damages ICYA workshop (story from The Messenger)
Fire damaged the workshop at Inner City Youth Alive, a Christian
ministry in Winnipeg's North End, in the early evening of Wednesday,
April 30. Local residents and Winnipeg's fire service responded
to contain the fire. No one was injured in the incident.
ICYA's 2008
Calling to Connect Banquet, "Voices of the Unheard",
was a great success raising over $110,000
On October 3rd, a sold out crowd of 380 came to ICYA's Calling
to Connect Banquet, "Voices of the Unheard" to understand
our community and show their support. The attendees got the rare
opportunity to view art and read poems displayed in the Galleria,
composed mainly by our youth in jail, expressing their hopes &
dreams, obstacles, regrets, mistakes, abuse and the desire for
people to understand them rather than be judged.

Inner City Youth Alive Building, Help ICYA Rebuild
In the early evening of April 30th, 2008, a fire was intentionally
set at Inner City Youth Alive claiming the west side of the workshop
area. The Fire Department was able to take out the blaze, which
spread to the roof. Thankfully, no one was injured.

For those of you who'd like to help some deserving kids
and families have a better Christmas, opportunity knocks.
Violence,
poverty, oppression don't change overnight

Caribou finds space to express himself and be a role model
for other aboriginal youth.
Church
waking up to its calling, says inner-city worker
Kent Dueck has seen the Church begin to wake up to its calling
to care for the poor, but he's not certain that it isn't
just a fad.
Cree
painter's brush puts life in perspective
Darryle Caribou isn't fazed by an audience peering over
his shoulder while he paints. In fact, the 24-year-old Cree
artist from Pukatawogan rather enjoys the attention he gets
while painting in public.
Inner-city
youth build and race stock cars
For a group of inner-city boys, the excitement when the
checkered flag drops at the speedway and the cars roar by
must feel like a world away from their homes in Winnipeg's
North End.
Aboriginal
teens share stories of hope with their people
It wasn't until Mikey finished talking and noticed his listener
was crying that he realized his own painful story had the
power to heal.
Chopper
club builds up inner-city youth
A bicycle-rebuilding program in Winnipeg's inner city and
North End is giving youth a chance to ride into brighter
future. A group of volunteers at Inner City Youth Alive
(ICYA) is helping boys and girls between the ages of 10
and 16 rebuild bicycles as part of a mentorship ministry.
Calling to Connect Banquet,
Three Hundred & Fifty Five Connected
On October 26th, there were 355 people
who answered the CALL TO CONNECT to the plight of our inner
city children at ICYA's 21st Anniversary Fundraising Banquet.
With the attendance and support of donors and sponsors the
banquet raised $114,230. Our prayers were answered. God
blessed us with a beautiful successful evening and a night
to remember.

Community Christmas Party, Thursday, December 20th
Thursday, December 20th we are
hosting our annual Christmas party for our community in
the North End. The party gives us the opportunity to share
the love of Christ to the families in our community by providing
a festive program, a free meal and, if possible, gifts to
every child under twelve. We expect to serve a meal to 500
people and give gifts to 200 children. So you can imagine
the amount of supplies required to make the night successful.
