Providence to Honour Four People for Significant Christian Contributions

At its graduation ceremonies on April 16 and 17 Providence College and Seminary will honor two graduates with an Alumnus of the Year Award. The recipients of these awards, one for the college and one for the seminary, are selected by the Providence Alumni Committee.

The Seminary alumnus of the year is Rev. Dr. John Stafford of the class of 1986. Since 1997 Stafford has been Dean of Theology and Chaplain at St. John’s College located on the campus of the University of Manitoba.

The College alumnus of the year is Dr. Steve Masterson of the class of 1972. Masterson was dean of students at Providence College and subsequently founding professor of counseling at Providence Seminary. Since 1997 he has been on the staff of Promise Keepers Canada where he now serves as Director of Spiritual Formation.

Providence College will also honour Kent Dueck, founder and executive director of Winnipeg Inner City Youth Alive, for his significant contribution to the lives of inner-city youth. Dueck will receive the College’s Distinguished Christian Leadership Award.

Providence will also award the honorary Doctor of Divinity degree to Rev. John Courtney, executive director of Winnipeg Youth for Christ. Most recently Courtney has directed the Centre for Youth Excellence building program in downtown Winnipeg. This award will be given at the Seminary Graduation ceremony.

The Seminary Graduation ceremony is at 10 AM, Saturday, April 16, in the Jubilee Auditorium on the campus of Providence College and Seminary in Otterburne, Manitoba. The College Graduation ceremony is at the same place on Sunday, April 17, at 2 PM. No tickets are required for either graduation ceremonies and there is adequate free parking on campus.
